New PSE Substation for Maple Valley

2009 December 14
by julesmaas

Construction of PSE’s new Four Corners substation (at 27430 Maple Valley – Black Diamond Road SE) was completed last friday. A $6.8 million facility, PSE now offers more power and capacity to our area just in time for the deep winter season. The substation includes a 25 megawatt (MW) transformer and space to add a second, enabling PSE to double the station’s capacity without changing the substation footprint.

“The completion of the Four Corners substation is an important upgrade to our infrastructure because it increases reliability for our existing customers and will help meet the future demand for electricity in the area,” said Jim Hutchinson, manager of local government and community relations for PSE.

“Currently, customers in the area are served from our Black Diamond substation, which is 2.4 miles south on SR 169,” said Hutchinson. “Having the substation closer to the load it serves will improve reliability.”

Construction began in April of 2009 and involved:

  • clearing and grading the site
  • construction of the facility
  • connecting the substation to the transmission line
  • restoring the landscape
  • installing 1.1 miles of new underground electrical distribution feeder

Final landscaping and frontage improvements should be finished by spring 2010.

Holiday Safety: For You and Your Family

2009 December 9
by julesmaas

The holiday season is a time of good-will – and so it is typical for us to let down our guard. While certainly the world needs more good than bad, and we should all contribute to making life better year-round, Officer Jeff Harmon reminds us that it’s also important to protect ourselves and our families.

General Awareness

Officer Harmon recommends, “be aware of your surroundings regardless of where you are or what you are doing.”

Whenever you find yourself in a brand-new place, (shopping mall, community center, restaurant, house, school, etc.)  take the time to look around and identify the general layout. Knowing your location with regard to exits, doorways, obstacles and other people can save you critical moments whether you’re in a hurry or an emergency.

Being aware will also help you avoid run-ins with the Grinch. According to Officer Harmon, “You are much less likely to become a victim of personal crime if you appear alert and aren’t flashy with money, jewelry or other expensive items.”

He recommends always staying in well-lit areas at night, and traveling with a group. Other tips: don’t leave packages in plain sight in your car, and when shopping, keep your purse between you and a friend to discourage snatchers.

Make a Family Safety Plan

To keep your family safe, no matter the time of year, it’s important to have a plan. It’s also important to remember it. Have a family meeting several times a year just for discussing safety concerns and to review each individual’s routine.

Keeping specific locations and activities in mind, ask situational questions to reveal ways they can be safe and prepared. For example:

What if:

  • we get separated at the shopping center?  Where would you go?  Who would you talk to?
  • you have to park your car in a busy parking lot?  What precautions can you take to be safer?
  • someone approaches to rob us while on the street at night or while walking to our car?  What would we do and how would we react?
  • someone approaches and asks if you want a ride or offers candy?  What would you do?  Who would you talk to?
  • the fire alarm or burglar alarm is activated in the middle of the night?  What would we do?  Where would we go?  Do we have a pre-planned escape route and/or meeting place?
